Pressed Flower Glass Coasters

I love the look of botanical prints and there’s something about seeing them under glass that brings out their beauty. It also reminds me of playing with my brother’s microscope as a kid. I really enjoyed playing with the slides and looking at the specimens under the glass.

Recently when visiting the new Hobby Lobby in our area with my sister and friend, we were looking down every aisle to see all the many craft supplies and home decor items.

In one aisle, there were shelves with thin multicolored slats of some sort. We quickly realized that they were panes of colored glass for stained glass projects. Above the shelves, were pre-packaged shapes of clear glass. I picked up two 3 x 3 inch beveled squares which I thought would make great coasters. I also picked up some 1/4 inch copper tape.

Using some pressed flowers and a cutting of maiden hair fern I quickly made two coasters by sandwiching the plant material between the two squares and taping the edges.

I couldn’t believe how pretty, easy, and affordable this project turned out. Imagine pressing some flowers from a special occasion like a wedding, or a luck four-leaf clover. What a nice keepsake they would make.

As I mentioned, the glass squares were purchased at Hobby Lobby. They were priced at $2.67 for two, which I thought was a pretty good bargain. However, I also found 4 inch squares online at $1.27 for a package of 4 at Consumer Crafts. The foil tape was $6.99 and I used a 40% off coupon on the Hobby Lobby iPhone app. So I ended up spending a little over $7 to make two coasters and enough tape to make close to 100 more.

Hmm could be my next Christmas project. 🙂
