Here’s an idea for anyone on your list who enjoys flowers. I’ve actually bought them for birthday gifts in the past but they would make a great Hanukkah or Christmas gifts too.
Robert Furber’s Twelve Months of Flowers botanical prints.
Robert Furber was a nurseryman from England in the 1700’s. In 1730 he published a flower seed catalog which included over 400 varieties of plants. They were grouped by the month in which the flowers bloomed and were arranged as a beautiful bouquet in an ornate urn. Story has it the Robert Furber spared no expense and hired two well known craftsman; illustrator, Pieter Casteels and engraver, Henry Flecther who add much to this spectacular edition.
The catalog was sold by subscription to wealthy landowners who wanted to grow plants for their beauty. After a while they became so popular that they were sold as wall art and still are today.
Each bouquet holds 30 flowers which were numbered to correspond with the legend at the bottom of the print denoting the flower’s name so that customers could easily purchase the plants that they were interested in.
These prints can be found in second hand stores and antique shops. Also online anywhere from $10 – $50 depending on the size. Check them out. They are truly one of the most beautiful botanical prints I’ve seen.sources:
