Winter is almost upon us and we will be stuck indoors so why not take some much needed "me time" to read a new garden book. I have picked out a select few for your review. You can add it to your holiday wishlist or buy one for a friend.
These books are a feast for the eyes as well as the mind. Some are basic how-tos and others have more reflections and insights into the gardener's life. The first two would make beautiful coffee table books where you can either leaf through and see what grabs your interest or delve into the details.
Planthropology: The Myths, Mysteries, and Miracles of My Garden Favorites by Ken Druse
Ken Druse, a veteran garden writer with sixteen books in his repertoire is also a great photographer as depicted in this book. I was instantly obsessed with the front cover; a beautiful dark poppy. Ken's writing is also fun to read. Loaded with history and allure of some of his favorite plants.
The Unexpected Houseplant by Tovah Martin
Tovah Martin goes beyond the typical houseplants we all think of and shows us how to grow the unusual inside. The photos are so beautiful you will be inspired to try them all. Once again the front cover drew me in; colorful drumstick primroses. I never thought about growing them indoors. She starts with Autumn just as you are getting ready to put away your garden and takes you through the seasons with tips and suggestions to beautify your home.
Backyard Parables: Lessons on Gardening, and Life by Margaret Roach
Just out last January this esteemed journalist previously worked for The New York Times, Newsday and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia before leaving it all behind to tend to the garden. This is Roach's second memoir telling the reader about her viewpoints over the years and sharing her insights. She even talks about how to deal with the ever invading deer population. This is more of a good novel and you'll love Margaret's easy writing style which makes you feel like you are listening to a friend.
Kiss My Aster: A Graphic Guide to Creating a Fantastic Yard Totally Tailored to You by Amanda Thomsen
This book came out last year and it a good basic and fun to look at. Its premise is to have an interactive book in today's interactive world. It's short and to the point and filled with brightly colored graphs making an easy venture into the world of gardening for all types of people and spaces.
You Grow Girl by Gayla Trail
This is another basic published in 2005 but may just be the one to help out newbies or those who just aren't confident in their garden. It's also a paperback with lots of fun graphics and interesting basic garden ideas in a practical and affordable fashion. Just the way I like it.
